About

In 1917, the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory was developed as the nation’s first civilian aeronautics research and development laboratory. Since its inception, Langley Research Center (LaRC) has been supporting National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and National Aeronautics & Space Administration  (NASA) missions in aeronautics, science and space. Today,  the Space Technology and Exploration Directorate (STED) is LaRC’s interface for both Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) and Human Exploration & Operations Mission Directorate (HEOMD), and for industry, academia and other government agencies with interests in our space technologies, test facilities, and applications.

Today, STED’s leadership team oversees approximately sixty projects including NASA directed technology development, space flight hardware development and collaborations with private space technology companies.
